Achnanthes

The easy maintenance in culture and presence of remarkable intra- and interspecific variation in breeding behaviour makes Achnanthes an especially good model for studying the reproductive and population biology of pennate diatoms (1-4). Molecular data and breeding behaviour of the strains in culture are currently combined in the PAE lab to study the evolution of breeding behaviour in the genus.
