Cyclotella
Cyclotella meneghiniana is one of the ecologically most important centric diatoms and easy to culture. C. meneghiniana was recently found to consist of a large number of cryptic species (5-6). Sexual reproduction is oogamous and homothallic sexual reproduction has been observed. The strains in the PAE culture collection come from geographically distant locations (Ukraine, Belgium, and Malawi).
