Nitzschia

Nitzschia is the largest single diatom genus and one of the most common, with species occurring in extreme environments such as organically polluted waters. Nitzschia sigma strains in the culture collection were isolated from the hyper saline Aral Sea. Molecular data are currently obtained for the Nitzschia palea strains in an effort to determine species boundaries in this group. The Nitzschia fonticola strains exhibit an extraordinary reduced sexuality with pedogamous production of auxospores in unpaired gametangia (12). In Nitzschia longissima the mating system is heterothallic. Experimental reduction of the cell size is possible by surgically cutting the cell endings with a razor blade (7).
